The ideal way to begin your adventure is the Maui Dive Shop’s Open Water Diver course. Under the guidance of a professional MDS instructor, you’ll develop the knowledge and skills necessary to enjoy a lifetime of underwater exploration. SSI’s modular, six-session teaching system includes a video, manual, study guide, and dive tables. In multiple confined water and open water sessions, you’ll practice SCUBA skills with SSI’s exclusive Comfort Through Repetition teaching method. Since you can’t dive without equipment, there is extensive information on SCUBA equipment, including: selecting the best diving equipment for your needs and budget, and maintaining and adjusting your equipment to extend its life and improve performance. Here is how to begin:

1. Sign up for your class in advance with Maui Dive Shop. Make payment for your class in order to reserve a space. Review the SSI Medical Statement with the store staff prior to signing up. If there are any medical conditions indicated by a “yes” on the medical statement you will need a Medical Release Form from the store for a doctor to sign before starting class.

2. Purchase your student kit so that you can begin your adventures immediately. You will need to read modules (chapters) 1-3, complete the knowledge reviews at the end of each module, and watch the video by the start of the first class. If you wish, you can read and complete the knowledge reviews for all 6 modules prior to class.

3. Purchase your mask, snorkel, fins, boots and log book. These items are known as your personal snorkeling system and are not included in your course fee. Starting your class with properly fit, quality personal dive gear eliminates potential problems and frustrations associated with unfamiliar equipment. Appropriate personal gear is essential for diving safety and comfort during and after training. Our store staff and your instructor will help you select equipment appropriate for your SCUBA experience.

4. Come to class ready for adventure! Wear your bathing suit and comfortable clothes for covering up in the air-conditioned classroom. Bring your activity voucher, student kit with completed knowledge reviews, logbook, dive tables, personal gear (mask, snorkel, fins, and boots), towel, sunscreen, sunglasses and lunch or lunch money. You will need to provide your own transportation by car throughout each class day to travel between the dive sites and the classroom sessions. A taxi or bicycle will not be adequate.

The SSI Open Water Diver kit includes the following required materials the SSI OW Diver Manual, video, and Recreational Dive Planner (tables).

PERSONAL SNORKELING SYSTEM: $100.00-300.00 Students must provide mask, snorkel, fins, boots, and logbook for class.

PREREQUISITES:
Completion of the SSI medical statement- If there are any medical conditions indicated by a “yes” on your medical statement you need a medical release form from the store for a doctor to sign before starting the class.

Minimum age 10 years old- A parent’s or guardian’s signature is required on the first day of class for minors. A parent or guardian must attend class sessions with children less than 12 years old.

SCHEDULE:
3 ½ DAYS Full days- usually 7:00AM to approx. 5:00PM
Half day- usually 7:00AM to approx. 1:00PM
