The Wreck of the “Carthaginian II”
On December 13, 2005, a gathering of water sports operators, photographers, local residents, tourists and the media
merged to sink the Carthaginian II. She now lies peacefully in 95 feet of water between Olowalu and Lahaina, ˝ mile offshore.
The Carthaginian II was built in 1920 as a commercial bulk carrier that sailed the Baltic Seas. In 1973, she was
converted into a replica of a whaling supply vessel to serve as a floating museum of the whaling days in Lahaina Town. She held her
own, tied to the dock in Lahaina, for more than thirty years and has been the subject of numerous posters, postcards, paintings and
photographs.
It took two years to prepare the 97’ steel hulled vessel for sinking and only 27 minutes to send her to “Davy Jones
Locker”. Sinking is the first step towards creating an artificial reef that will become a new marine habitat.
Today the Carthaginian II sits on the bottom in the pristine waters of Maui. She will be enjoyed by submarine
passengers and scuba divers alike. Maui Dive Shop is proud to announce that twice a week we are leading divers to the site for an
amazing “one of a kind” dive adventure.
Come and join us on Saturday afternoons for a one-tank dive to see Maui’s newest dive destination. Maui Dive Shop
