Ahihi Bay & La Perouse Bay-
Dive
and Snorkel Locations
The first entry area at Ahihi Bay is excellent for beginners. One of Maui's four marine reserves. Located about 1.5 miles past the Maui Prince Hotel. Look for a small bay right beside the road, next to a hexagon-shaped house. There is a second entry location a 1/2 mile further down the road, look to your right for a gravel parking area. No beach facilities. Excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Coral and fish abound. The little bay has no beach and the entry bottom is rocky. Just wade out knee deep (watch for waves) and start snorkeling.
A little further down the road is the larger part of Ahihi Bay. Entry here is tricky because of the lava rock coastline. However, once you're out in the bay you are in for a treat. This is diving on Maui at its best. Abundant coral and marine life. Recommended for intermediate level.
Entry at La Perouse Bay is similar to Ahihi Bay. Enter anywhere along
the shore just past the house on the private beach (one of only two in
the state). If you dive along the right side, remember this is still in
the underwater marine reserve area. Dive to the left and you'll be outside
the reserve. White sandy bottom with massive coral heads are prevalent.
Marine life is diverse and abundant. |
